The Science Curriculum

Our Science curriculum includes the new 9-1 GCSE for years 9 and 10 and will continue next year into year 11. The current year 11 follow the old A*-C GCSE specification.

Homework

KS 3

Students will receive at least one piece of homework per week taking up to 1 hour to complete. Occasionally more extended project work will replace weekly homework.

KS 4

Students will receive at least one piece of homework per week taking at approximately 1 hour to complete

KS 5

Student will receive homework that will take the same amount of time to complete as their total lesson time (currently 5 hours)

 

Equipment:

Students are expected to bring the following equipment to every lesson:

·         Calculator (Scientific for KS 4 and 5)

·         2 black or blue biros

·         2 pencils

·         Ruler

·         Pencil sharpener

·         Rubber

·         Scissors

 

KS 3 Curriculum (Years 7 and 8)

The science curriculum follows a 2 year KS 3 programme based on the national curriculum and is supported by the Exploring Science book which is available online. Our emphasis is on developing scientific skill necessary for study at GCSE and AS/A2 level, which include maths for science, communication skills and practical science.

Assessment

In addition to homework students will be assessed regular at the end of unit tests to monitor progress. Student may be moved between classes depending on their results. There will be an end of year exam towards during the second part of the summer term; this will help to determine the appropriate class for students entering the next academic year.

 

KS 4 Curriculum (Years 9, 10 and 11)

The science curriculum follows a 3 year KS 4 programme based on Edexcel’s 9-1 GCSE for years 9 and 10 and Edexcel’s A*-C GCSE for year 11. GCSE 9-1 will be assessed by a series of exams at the end of year 11. There is no course work however there are a series of assessed practicals that students have to undertake which will be tested as part of the final exams. Some students will be entered for BTEC science if they find exams difficult. BTEC is largely course work based, with an exam that can be taken several times.

The new 9-1 GCSE is supported by the Edexcel Combined Science book and Edexcel Biology, Chemistry and Physics books, all of which are available online. Students can access their class book, revision materials and tests by visiting the ActiveLearn website at:
